Hedging and Hedgerow Creation
For
thousands of years man has been dividing up the
landscape using boundaries. The means has been
many and varied, from fences and ditches, to walls
and embankments, but one of the most enduring,
and environmentally positive, has been the hedge.
From
Saxon times and before, landowners have planted
and managed hedgerows. Remarkably, many of those
earliest boundary hedges still exist, but over
the past fifty years the introduction of increasingly
mechanised methods of agriculture has resulted
in the loss of countless miles of hedgerow.
Today,
the tide is turning, and farmers are now looking
back to the planting of hedges and hedge maintenance,
not only as a cost-effective means of marking
the boundaries of their land, but also as one
of the most environmentally friendly.
Nicholsons
is perfectly equipped to assist with all stages
of hedgerow creation and hedge maintenance, from
the supply of bare-root stock, to the planting
and protecting of new hedging and its subsequent
maintenance. We are also able to offer hedge laying
on older hedges.
If all that is too slow, how about planting one
of our 'instant hedges' using our renowned container
grown range of plants! |
